For the next question in our “Ask an RV Tech” series, we ask Hank, our resident expert this: Should I leave the battery on, or off while my RV is parked? Hank says, “If your coach is plugged in leave them on, and if it’s not plugged in, then you should turn them off… and always, always check the water level in your batteries”. Overcharging batteries results in severe water loss and plate corrosion. If you’re putting the RV in long term storage, it’s recommended that you remove the battery (or batteries) and put them in storage too. They should be stored in a cool, dry place where they will not be subjected to extreme temperatures. You should test your stored batteries once a month and charge batteries that test below 80%. You should always fully recharge your batteries before reinstalling them, and if you decide to leave the batteries in the RV, you should still check them monthly and charge if below 80%.
