On Your Next RV Trip, Check Out a Podcast!

Blog

podcastsOf all of the new-fangled, fancy, digital, new-agey “stuff” we have available to us these days, my favorite is the podcast. If you aren’t yet familiar with podcasts, and what they even are, or why you should care, then this blog is for you! We will start with the basics. “Podcasting” is a form of audio broadcasting on the internet. The word itself is a combination of “iPod” and “Broadcasting” because originally people downloaded the audio broadcasts to listen to on their iPods. Now, it is different… You don’t have to have an iPod to listen to a podcast. They can be downloaded to your computer, your iPhone, your Android, and even to your car if your car is equipped for such a thing.   The way it works is that you subscribe to the podcast(s) of your choice, and then they are available for download onto your device every time a new one is released, which for most podcasts means weekly.  The most common way to get podcasts is through the use of iTunes, which automatically downloads your podcasts to your device. If you are already using iTunes for music, you can simply search the category labeled “Podcasts” and find something that interests you. If you are not using iTunes, you will need to go to your smartphone’s app store to download a free podcasting app. This app will serve as the medium to transfer the podcast from the internet to your device. You will find that there are podcasts available on just about everything you can think of! Economics, comedy, real life stories, cooking, politics, and even RV’ing! No matter what kind of RV’er you are, there’s a podcast for you! “Living The RV Dream” is a podcast by John and Kathy Higgins who have been full-time RV’ers since 2005. In their podcast they cover everything from lifestyle adjustments and funny stories of RV’ing mishaps, to a full guide on winterizing your RV.  In “Roadtreking – The RV Podcast”, award winning journalist Mike Wendland travels across North America in his RV reporting on all of the characters he meets, the places he sees that you’ll want to put on your bucket list, and he reviews the latest in travel technology. “The RV Campfire” podcast is an informative radio talk show offering an entertaining look at RV issues and topics. Besides RV specific podcasts, two wildly popular (and favorites of mine personally) are “This American Life” which offers first person stories that are touching, funny, and surprising. Each week they pick a theme and bring you different stories on that theme. The other, is “Serial”, which came from the creators of This American Life and it is the unfolding of a true story. Each week is a new “episode” in the story following a real life murder mystery. This one really has the whole family captivated. In our family, podcasts have become the preferred listening for long car trips. We don’t always agree on what music to listen to, but we can all get interested in listening to a podcast! So, if you haven’t yet ventured into the interesting world of podcasting. Now’s the time! There’s something there for everyone, and when you’re on those long RV drives, a great story to get you thinking, talking, and inspired may be just the thing!
