Visit the Trees of Mystery in Klamath, California
Situated right in the center of the Redwood National and State Parks, lies California’s original redwood Nature Attraction. The Trees of Mystery is California’s premier nature attraction on the North Coast, and has been welcoming visitors to this part of the world for over 65 years. Just 35 miles south of the Oregon border in Klamath, California, you’ll find this fantastic roadside attraction. You can’t miss it… Just look for the 49 foot Paul Bunyon and his 35 foot tall friend, Babe The Blue Ox. Paul Bunyon will be waving, having conversations and cracking jokes with visitors, making little kids and grown-ups alike giggle. To someone who has never seen one, a Redwood tree must seem to be something from a tall tale… Someplace you may find, say, Paul Bunyon. These giants average eight feet to as much as twenty feet in diameter, and some are as tall as three hundred and seventy five feet. That is a tree taller than the Statue of Liberty, from base of the pedestal to the tip of the torch. A tree larger around and through than a Greyhound bus. Absolutely the largest living thing on earth. A typical Redwood forest contains more bio-mass per square foot than ANY other area on earth, and that includes the Amazonian rain forests. The fact that we have this wonder right here in our own back yard? Well, that just makes us SO lucky! You’ll begin this adventure with entrance to the Trees of Mystery Trail System which is located in the courtyard in front of the gift shop. The trails start with the Kingdom of Trees section first which ends at the Cathedral Tree. Then, a junction there leads to Forest Experience Trail, and beyond that Brotherhood Station, SkyTrail, and Wilderness Trail. Upon return from those, follow a loop back to the same junction and then on to the Trail of Tall Tales. When you finish all of that, exit to the gift shop and the End of Trail Museum. SkyTrail is one of the most exciting features of the entire Trees of Mystery experience. SkyTrail is the nearly 1/3 mile journey through the forest tree tops inside the unique gondola ride. Surely nowhere else are you going to have the chance to get an up-close downward perspective from the tops of these majestic redwood trees that measure hundreds of feet in height. A total of 8 gondola cars continuously make the 10 minute, 1570 foot trip up the mountain each day, giving riders not only spectacular views of the magnificent redwoods, but also a breathtaking mountaintop ocean vista at the observation deck at the summit. The SkyTrail gondola ride is included in your $15 admission price. When you’ve built up an appetite from exploring this amazing forest, you can walk right across the street for a good home-cooked meal at the Forest Cafe. The Trees of Mystery is open from 8am to 7pm every day during the summer months, and you should plan to spend at least a few hours exploring. Don’t forget your comfortable walking shoes and your camera! Have you been to the Trees of Mystery? Do you have photos, stories or tips to share with us?
