Just as diverse as we all are, is the manner in which we like to RV. Not everyone wants to pay and stay in an incorporated RV Park with dozens of other people, activities, etc. There are definitely those “Lone Wolf” types… the ones who prefer camping off the grid, which is known as, “boondocking”. Boondocking is camping without hook-ups, usually out in the boondocks.
The word boondock originated early in the 20th century from American military servicemen serving in the Philippines. It comes from a word for mountain, “bundog”. They started using it to reference a rural, remote, bushy area. When they came home they developed the slang word “boonies”. The RV community adopted the word to use it to describe remote camping in rural areas. While it can be appealing for various reasons, wide open spaces, no fees, solitude, etc., there are some challenges to boondocking.
If you don’t have all the amenities and hook-ups, you have to be self sufficient. Solar panels can give you the freedom to enjoy the peace and quiet of remote locations without having to run your generator too much. We offer Zamp Solar Panels right here in our Fresno parts store! RV Geeks has a great 4 minute video showing solar panel installation and operation that can really help give you a better understand of how they work and what you can expect from your solar panels. While the upfront cost of solar panels and installation may put some folks off, most everyone that has done it will tell you it was well worth it.
