Camping Tips and Hacks You’ve Got to Have!

If you’re planning your first camping trips of the year, keep some of these great camping tips and hacks in mind, as well as some of these must-have camping gadgets that will make your life easier when you’re out roughing it!

Get Warm

Don’t risk your matches getting wet or lost. Invest in a ferro rod or flint lighter so you can confidently strike sparks whenever you need to!

Stay Warm

Buy some reusable handwarmers for chilly afternoons and evenings. My family loves using HotSnapZ handwarmers and they are easily reactivated, saving space and money. Search for reusable handwarmers online.

Store Smart

Don’t eat up space in your new or used RV that you could pack more efficiently. For instance, save some space in your pantry by not taking full spice and seasoning bottles – switch out the full size bottles and transfer the spices you need to empty TicTac containers, for instance. When prepping meals ahead of time (I don’t go camping without doing this first!), combine your meal ingredients in a gallon size food storage bag, and freeze flat. Your meals are more packable this way, because they aren’t lumpy, cumbersome frozen bags.

Speaking of food, a fantastic meal or snack option to consider is freeze dried foods. My kids love freeze dried fruits in trail mix, but it also mixes well with oatmeal for a hearty breakfast. A great perk of utilizing freeze-dried foods for meals is that by nature, they take up a lot less space than their “normal” counterparts, and reconstitute quickly and easily with just water.

Think Safety

Make sure you have a small emergency kit packed that can easily be tucked in the bottom of a backpack. I store ours in a waterproof box and it contains the following:

  • Packable rain ponchos
  • Emergency reflective blanket
  • Emergency whistle
  • Ferro rod
  • Small assortment of bandages and first aid kit items

Stay Charged

One of my favorite gifts I’ve given the hikers in my family is a solar powered device charger! It clips to the backpack and can charge right up on a sunny day. It holds enough power to quickly charge your phone, even when you’ve gone off the grid.
