Ok, so we’re not exactly trekking alongside the Founding Fathers, but if you travel to Williamsburg, you can walk along the same steps the Founding Fathers once took. Now, you just have to visit Colonial Williamsburg. It has been called the “Disney World” of American History. It’s a history themed park with popular stops including the Governor’s Palace, the Magazine (home of the colony’s weaponry and ammunition), the old-time church, tavern and theater, and the period homes.
Another great area to visit, and also one filled with history, is Jamestown. According to US Travel News, “this area is technically comprised of several historic areas. First up: Historic Jamestowne, the actual archaeological site on Jamestown Island where the original 1607 settlers were based. Next door is the Jamestown Settlement, a re-enactment museum with replicas of the settlers’ ships, plus life-size models of their homes and the villages of the area’s American Indians. And adjacent to that: Yorktown Victory Center, another open-air living museum that chronicles the British troops surrender to the United States at the Yorktown Battlefield in 1781.”
Let’s not forget about the Williamsburg Winery. The winery offers all sorts of events. September through November there are ten different festivals! The winery also has dining and lodging. The grounds are beautiful and you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported back in time and across the sea to an early 18th century European winery. A walk down the main avenue might well be a stroll in Provence, with the setting and architectural styles faithfully reproduced to create a special ambiance unique to the Williamsburg area.
