If you’re new to the RV lifestyle, you may have some concerns about getting used to this new way of life. Often, the most concerning for folks is driving. The fact is, this rig is quite likely much larger than anything else you have ever driven. Driving a big ol’ motorhome and/or pulling a towable can be challenging, and it’s easy to psych yourself out. The fact of the matter is, it just takes a little practice to get comfortable with it.
There are courses available at RV driving schools located all across the country, but they aren’t currently available in every state. If you can’t get yourself into a course, it’s important to take your RV to a big, open, lot and practice. Practice backing up, practice maneuvering out of a tight space and making a complete turn around, practice, practice, practice. It will make all the difference when you’re faced with a challenge out on the open road.
A great resource for those new to rving is newrver.com. Russ and Tina DeMaris have many helpful articles here. One point they really focus on with regard to RV driving safety, is planning ahead. Planning ahead not only for the route you’ll take, road conditions, bridge heights, etc. but also paying attention to your entrances and exits. Making sure you have an easy in, and an easy out before you pull into someplace. They stress the importance of looking ahead – sometimes pulling over and walking ahead when you cannot see – to make sure you don’t get yourself stuck in a situation that you can not safely and easily get out of. Not only do they cover many tips on driving, but they give information on most all the questions a newbie may have. From the very beginning of RV shopping, to faster showering, space saving tips, arrival and departure checklists, being a full-timer, and more… They cover a lot of ground and are really a great resource.
